The Spill App is a Black-owned social media platform that emphasizes visual-first conversations “at the speed of culture”. Founded by former Twitter employees, it serves as a community-focused alternative for culture drivers, particularly Black, queer, and other underserved groups. Core Features & Vocabulary
The app uses a unique “tea” themed vocabulary for its social interactions:
Spills: These are your posts, which can include text, memes, videos, and photos. The Tea Cup: Tapping this icon allows you to “like” a post.
Overreactions: You can long-press the tea cup to give up to 100 reactions at once. Double-tapping gives a special “overreaction” message.
Brewing: Following other users to build your custom feed is known as “Building Your Brew”.
Tea Parties: Users can join or host live audio and video chat rooms for real-time conversation. Getting Started
Download: The app is free and available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Create Profile: You will need a handle (2–15 characters), email, and password.
Select Interests: During setup, you’ll choose interests like fashion, comedy, or gaming to help the app suggest content.
Explore: The feed typically features large images and GIFs in reverse chronological order, making it feel like a hybrid of Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Community & Safety
AI Moderation: Spill uses a custom large language model trained by marginalized groups to detect and prevent harassment more effectively than mainstream platforms.
Creator Support: The platform aims to use blockchain technology to credit creators and potentially allow them to monetize their “Spills” in the future.
Age Rating: The app has an 18+ rating due to potential mature themes and user-generated content. Spill-App – App Store – Apple
