To fix an annoying spot, dot, or box trailing your mouse cursor, you must first identify what the artifact looks like. This issue is usually caused by corrupted cursor files, stuck background processes, or accidental accessibility settings.
Follow these steps to target and eliminate the exact visual glitch you are seeing. 1. Fix a Spinning Loading Circle (Most Common)
If the “spot” is a constant blue loading circle flashing next to your cursor, Windows thinks a background program is working. You can force it to reset: Open the Control Panel via the Start menu.
Change the view setting in the top right to Large icons, then double-click Mouse. Switch to the Pointers tab at the top of the pop-up box.
Under the “Customize” list, look for Working in Background or Busy.
Click Browse, scroll to the very top, select the standard default arrow (arrow_r), and click Open.
Click Apply, then OK to permanently clear the looping loading animation. 2. Fix a Highlight Circle (CTRL Key Spotlight)
If a circle or spot flashes around your cursor every time you type or tap keys, an automated finder setting is active:
Open Settings (Windows Key + I) and search for Mouse Settings.
Click Additional mouse options (located at the bottom of the page in Windows 11). Go to the Pointer Options tab. Uncheck Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
Alternative Note: If you use Microsoft PowerToys, open the app, find Mouse Utilities, and toggle off Find My Mouse. 3. Fix a Solid Black, Blue, or Dotted Box
If the spot looks like a distinct square or pixelated box following the arrow, it is usually a graphical rendering bug. Use these visual refreshes:
